HONOLULU –  The Hawaii Annual Code Challenge (HACC) held its first virtual workshop, featuring Google’s Data Analytics and Visualization platform.  More than 80 people attended the workshop, which gave an overview about data and the challenges on how to organize them.  A demonstration on ways to organize the data visually for the consumer was also presented.

In celebration of the HACC’s fifth year, workshops are being offered to participants to help them build their toolbox ahead of the competition.  The HACC is a four-week hackathon-inspired competition designed to encourage civic engagement with the local tech community – from students, amateurs to professionals.  The competition fosters modernizing state functions, processes, and services, while supporting innovation and workforce development. Workshops for HACC participants are available in areas such as, technical skills development as well as pitch presentation training, which they would apply during the competition.  These opportunities also give them invaluable real-world experience and the ability to connect with professionals in the industry.

The competition encourages interaction between community teams and State of Hawai’i department personnel, who put forth challenges teams try to solve.  The teams’ solutions ultimately result in proof-of-concepts that could be developed further to modernize state government and benefit the community.

Kick Off:  Saturday, October 24 at the Hawaii State Capitol

Workshops:  Saturday, October 31 & November 7 at the Entrepreneurs Sandbox, Kakaako

Judging & Presentation Day:  Saturday, November 21, Location TBD

The HACC is the brainchild of Gov. David Ige and is coordinated by the State of Hawai’i’s Office of Enterprise Technology Services (ETS), in partnership with multiple state departments and agencies.  As in past years, there is no cost in participating in the HACC, thanks to the generous support of its community partners and sponsors.
